Logistics and Distribution
In the western world we have become used to the convenience of fresh goods and produce in our grocery stores every day, and we think nothing of buying hi-tech equipment such as TVs, computers or even cars from far flung places such as Japan and China. It would even be fair to say that the vast majority of people take these incredible feats of planning and organisation for granted, eager to moan on the one day of the month that their local Tesco runs out of sweet melon but rarely sparing a thought for the thousands of people and millions of pounds of investment that makes that occurrence a rarity rather than the norm.
The development of stock distribution networks and their design has become a science in itself, with centrally placed depots filled with rack upon rack of industrial shelving responsible for the reception, sorting and delivery of tens of thousands of food stores nationwide. Most of this process is computerised, with consignment information stored in barcodes that are scanned on arrival and dispatch. This allows for 100% accuracy of data input and prevents anything being lost among the jungle of industrial shelving that fills these giant warehouses.
Computing has also increased the speed of many of the physical processes of transporting stock, with many dockyards employing small armies of computer controlled cranes and trucks which allow container ships to be unloaded far more rapidly than when under purely human control.
